The Best Things in Life are Free

Hugs.

Sometimes they’re big, affectionate bear hugs.

Sometimes they’re fun group hugs.

And sometimes, they’re mucho awkward (think of poor Draco getting hugged by Voldemort in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2 movie).

But more often than not, hugs are meant to display affection and love.

But why do hug, anyways?

There are so many ways to show love: words, gifts, time, service.

But hugs seem to be somewhat universal. There are definitely exceptions. But in general, people like hugging.

Personally, I think we hug because they make us feel safe. There’s something so comforting about being physically close to someone. As humans, we are communal creatures. We like to have people. We like to know that if we fall, someone has our back. We like to feel a connection with someone. More than anything, we love to love, and we love to be loved.

Another thing is that sometimes a hug can express what words cannot. Words are great; I love them. Words are my favorite way to give and receive love. But sometimes they’re not enough. Actions speak louder than words, and a good hug can mean more than even the most well-wishing words.

And the most wonderful thing about hugs is that they’re so easy to give away. You don’t have to try to come up with the perfect words or look for the right gift. All it takes is a loving heart and willing arms to show that love. And I’m not just talking about romantic love; friends can love each other and give beautiful hugs, too.

Wrapped in the arms of someone who cares about you is one of the most comforting feelings in the world. Even if it’s just for a moment, you know you’re okay. Because it’s not just physical safety; you’re safe in that person’s free love, too.
